What is Brief Therapy?
Brief therapy is a focused, goal-oriented approach to psychological support. Unlike traditional long-term therapy, it doesn’t start with an open-ended exploration of the past – it starts with where you want to go. The focus is on concrete, achievable change in as few sessions as possible.
Solution-Oriented Brief Therapy (SOBT) was developed in the 1970s and 80s and is now one of the best-researched short-term approaches in the field. It builds on your existing strengths and resources rather than dwelling on problems. The central question is not “What is wrong?” but “What would different look like – and what small steps lead there?”
Why Brief Therapy Works
- Concrete results in fewer sessions – many clients notice significant shifts within 3–6 sessions
- Builds on your strengths instead of reinforcing the problem narrative
- Practical and forward-focused – you leave each session with clarity, not just insight
- Flexible format – online via Zoom, in English or German, from anywhere in the world
- Combines well with other approaches such as trauma work or inner child healing
Brief Therapy vs. Long-Term Therapy
Both approaches have their place. Brief therapy is especially effective when you have a specific challenge, a clear goal, or want to create momentum for change. Long-term therapy may be more appropriate for deeply complex trauma histories or when a slower, more open-ended process is needed.
Brief Therapy
- Goal-oriented from session one
- Typically 3–12 sessions
- Focuses on solutions and resources
- Measurable progress, session by session
- Ideal for specific challenges or stuck points
Traditional Long-Term Therapy
- Open-ended exploration
- Often months or years
- Focuses on understanding the past
- Slower, more gradual process
- Better suited for complex, diffuse issues
Solution-Oriented Brief Therapy – An Overview
How I Use Brief Therapy in My Work
I integrate Solution-Oriented Brief Therapy with other methods such as inner child work, hypnotherapy, and the Completion Process by Teal Swan. This allows for a flexible, tailored approach: solution-oriented where momentum is the goal, depth-oriented where deeper roots need attention.
Online brief therapy sessions via Zoom take approximately 60–75 minutes. You set the agenda. We work in the language that feels most natural to you – English or German.
“Hendrik accompanied me with great warmth and, at the same time, remarkable clarity – gently drawing my attention to my blind spots. He was tremendously helpful in finding a clear vision for both my professional and personal life.”
— Tobias, ClientFrequently Asked Questions
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients experience meaningful shifts within 3–6 sessions. Some challenges resolve in as few as 1–2; others benefit from a longer process. We assess this together as we go – there is no fixed commitment upfront.
Is online brief therapy as effective as in-person?
Research consistently shows that online therapy is equally effective for most challenges. Many clients actually find it easier to open up from their own environment – and the flexibility removes the barrier of geography entirely.
What can brief therapy help with?
Relationship difficulties, recurring emotional patterns, lack of clarity or direction, anxiety, self-doubt, life transitions, and processing a difficult phase. If you’re unsure whether your situation fits, the phone consultation is the right place to find out.
Do you work in English and German?
Yes. Sessions are available in both languages. Many international clients find it valuable to work in English even when German is their first language – sometimes emotional material is easier to approach in a second language.
